Samhain originated in Celtic areas of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and France. However, the annual event became Christianised under certain popes. Among them, Pope Gregory III placed All Saint’s Day on November 1st and All Souls Day on November 2nd. The latter became known as All Hallows' Eve, and eventually by the name of Halloween.
How Has Halloween Evolved?
Halloween has come a long way from its ancient origins. The modern festival has departed both from the ancient pagan roots of Samhain and the old Christian tradition of the remembrance of saints and souls. Instead, contemporary Halloween, much like other annual festivals, has become largely secular and commercialised. While elements of the spiritual remain evident, marketing efforts have turned the day into a consumerist event that sees shoppers spend hundreds of millions in the United Kingdom alone.
