Dill (Anethum graveolens) is a member of the celery family. With delicate flowers, this annual herb will self-seed when mature and continue to grow in your garden in a spot that it prefers every year. Be sure not to plant near carrots or cross pollination can occur and pollute both strains. Respecting this basic caution, Dill is not an antagonist and can be planted with most other companion herbs. A herb that makes creamy things creamier, Dill is a favourite addition to mayonnaise used with seafood, especially salmon.
Dill does not like to be potted on and should be sown directly into its permanent home. Lightly rake in seeds and water well in late spring or early summer. Once seedlings appear, thin them out to allow for root room. As a companion plant to cannabis, Dill attracts friendlies like honeybees and hoverflies, ichneumon wasps and other beneficial wasps. Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars will forgo your cannabis as they prefer feasting on Dill instead.
Spider mites, the curse of every cannabis farmer, dislike Dill and will stay away in droves. Dill is also an effective repellent for aphids, cabbage looper and squash bugs while adding a subtle fragrance to the air that helps confuse the pungency of cannabis.
