Top 5 Strains for Insomnia & Sleep Issues
Do you wake up feeling tired, or struggle to fall/stay asleep? Cannabis can have a very notable effect on our energy levels and sleep cycle. Below we'll shine a light on 5 of the best cannabis strains for sleep.
Waking up after a full night’s sleep makes you feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead. We usually take it for granted, but, for some people, even getting a few hours of solid sleep is a major achievement.
Insomnia, a relatively common sleeping disorder, negatively impacts sleep onset, duration, and quality for millions of people. There are various treatments out there, each working to varying degrees. Alongside a long list of lifestyle changes, though, cannabis might help one cope with the condition.
Cannabis contains a vast cocktail of phytochemicals. Among these are over 100 cannabinoids, molecules largely unique to the herb. The cannabinoids THC and CBN—found in most strains— are known for their ability to chill out the mind and help smokers wind down in the evening.
But, as modern research has shown, it’s terpenes that underpin each cultivar’s unique effects.
They synergise with cannabinoids to tweak their effects, and even pack some impressive properties of their own. Some terpenes will make you feel alert, whereas others, as we’ll show you, are soothing and relaxing. Along with that, these aromatic molecules are responsible for the varying flavours and tastes of each strain.
Check out the strains below for terpene profiles that will help you nod off at nighttime.
1. Haze Berry
Haze Berry is a Californian delicacy created by crossing Blueberry with Haze. The result is a sweet strain with a notable berry aroma, strong genetics, and a balanced, relaxing stone that's best enjoyed in the evening when you want to unwind and relax.
Haze Berry's aroma is, you guessed it, very berry-dominated, though it also boasts notable Haze undertones that fuse spicy citrus and earthy notes. This strain is also particularly high in pinene, which adds to its positive influence on mood. In terms of flavour, Haze Berry makes for a very sweet smoke that boasts strong berry aromas on the inhale, and a subtle yet notable spicy aftertaste. Her effects are initially uplifting, reminiscent of the Haze she was bred from, but quickly transition into a relaxing body stone that'll set you up for a great night's sleep.
Growing Haze Berry is a real treat. Her traits are predominantly sativa-like, with plants reaching up to 2m in height and taking 9–11 weeks to flower. Come harvest time, Haze Berry will be heavy with dense, frosty buds—up to 575g/m² worth indoors and 650g/plant outdoors.

2. White Widow
White Widow is arguably one of the most famous cannabis strains on the planet. This robust cultivar is loved not only for her large yields of rock-hard buds, but also her strong stone that provides a creative and social boost before soothing your entire body.
While the exact origins of White Widow remain a mystery to this day, we know that the strain first made its appearance in the Netherlands in the 90s, where it became an instant hit at coffeeshops. Her tantalising aroma combines woody, earthy, and herbal notes with an underlying spicy kick. Her flavours are also very earth-forward, with a spicy, herbal aftertaste that lingers on the tongue for some time. Bearing high levels of the terpene myrcene and roughly 19% THC, White Widow produces an initial euphoria that might spark your creativity and desire for conversation. Soon after, however, a wave of relaxation will wash over your body, leaving you in a happy and deeply soothed state, ready for a peaceful slumber.
Besides her great flavour/aroma and potent effect, White Widow is also loved for her solid grow traits. Indoors, plants are compact, reaching heights of roughly 60–100cm. At the same time, outdoor White Widow plants can grow up to 150–190cm, developing into strong, bushy plants with countless bud sites. White Widow's flowering time lasts roughly 8–10 weeks, and her harvests clock in at 450–500g/m² indoors and 550–600g/plant outdoors.

3. Watermelon
Watermelon is a newer addition to the Royal Queen Seeds catalogue, and carries on the genetics of the original Watermelon OG (also known as Watermelon Kush). As her name implies, this strain boasts a sweet tropical fruit aroma as well as high amounts of THC.
Watermelon's rich terpene profile gives her a strong aroma combining sweet watermelon notes with hints of citrus, grapes, and tropical fruits. A trained nose might also be able to pick up on her subtle hash undertones. The flavour of Watermelon is similarly dominated by sweet fruit overtones, with more subtle earth and citrus notes on the exhale. Meanwhile, with up to 22% THC, Watermelon produces effects that start in the head, then work themselves down into the rest of your body. Light her up an hour or so before bed as you unwind on the couch and prepare for a long, restorative night's sleep.
Thanks to her solid and well-balanced genetics, Watermelon performs very well both indoors and out, and takes just around 7–8 weeks to flower. Indoors, she can stay nice and compact, reaching heights of roughly 80–130cm and producing respectable yields of roughly 450–500g/m². Outdoor plants, on the other hand, can grow up to 200cm tall and produce 400–500g/plant.

4. Legendary OG Punch
Have you ever detected a pleasant hint of earthiness while smoking a joint? The terpene myrcene underpins this delicious flavour, and Legendary OG Punch packs large amounts of the molecule. Myrcene teams up with a THC content of 19% to produce a stoning body high that soothes the muscles and shuts down whirling thoughts. Her buds also possess good quantities of terpineol that adds the cherry on top of this chilled-out experience.
As the progeny of Legend OG and Purple Punch, this strain possesses the best traits of each parent. She produces compact flowers covered in trichomes and forms abundant canopies in the blooming stage. Expect up to 400g/m² in the grow room and 550g/plant in the garden. Prepare to harvest these flowers after a short flowering time of eight weeks.

5. Special Kush 1
Kush strains are the crème de la crème of indica varieties. And our Special Kush 1, if we may say so ourselves, definitely holds true to that notion. Special Kush 1 originates from the Hindu Kush mountain range between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and has all the flair you'd expect from a top-shelf indica, from her compact structure and resilience to her potent stone.
Special Kush produces small, tight buds with a very distinct aroma dominated by the soothing terpene linalool; expect spicy and earthy notes, as well as fresh pine and floral aromas. Her flavour is smooth and earthy, with a spicy kick on the exhale, reminiscent of Afghan hash. With 17% THC, Special Kush might not be the most potent strain from our catalogue, but don't let that fool you. She delivers a long-lasting body high that'll begin taking over after your first inhale. Enjoy Special Kush on a quiet night in, along with a hearty meal, your favourite movie, or some good music, and let her lull you into a deep state of relaxation that'll perfectly prep you for bed.
Given her genetics, Special Kush tends to perform at her best when grown outdoors in a warm climate. Here she can deliver harvests of up to 550g/plant. However, Special Kush still performs well inside, thanks to her compact structure, and can churn out up to 475g/m².
