Royal Gorilla Strain: The Descendant of Sour Dubb, Chem Sis, and Chocolate Diesel

Video id: 328585080

Without a doubt, Royal Gorilla is one of the most talked about cannabis strains to come out of the US in a long time, quickly making a name for itself as a connoisseur favorite in the states. Her discovery, however, was entirely coincidental. Two breeders from the US, Joesy Whales and Lone Watie, discovered the strain after Joesy’s Chem Sis plants accidently hermied and pollinated his Sour Dubb. We don’t know exactly what made Lonie keep some of the seeds when Joesy tossed the strain out, but what we know is that he later germinated them maybe just out of curiosity and what shot out from the soil was nothing less than the spectacular Royal Gorilla!

Royal Gorilla Cannabis Seeds: Harvest Award-Winning, Dispensary-Grade Weed Right at Home

The minute we laid eyes on Royal Gorilla, we were star-struck. Her dense flowers glistened with a frosty coat of resin and filled the room with her recognisable earthy sweet aroma. After testing her THC levels, we were blown away to see that buds packed an average of 24–26% THC, with some phenos testing as high as 30%.

Like the original GG4, Royal Gorilla seeds produce massively sticky flowers and relaxing effects that'll melt away your worries and leave you glued to the couch in a deep, relaxing trance. And we're not the only people impressed—Royal Gorilla won 1st place in the New Strains category at the Highlife Cannabis Cup, as well as 3rd place in the Indica category.

Yield and Growth Habit of Royal Gorilla Seeds

Royal Gorilla isn’t necessarily a strain that you would choose for its yields, which are in fact quite moderate - the focus here is on the quality of the bud, rather than the quantity. You can grow Royal Gorilla seeds indoors or outdoors, where they will develop massive buds with wonderful lime-green leaves. Thanks to its strong resin production, the leaves will become covered with an abundance of trichomes, that will beautifully sparkle in the sun!

Effects of the Royal Gorilla Strain

Most Royal Gorilla plants average a THC content of 24–26%, but certain phenotypes can surpass this when expertly grown. This cultivar induces a very potent effect that is incredibly relaxing - superb for chilling and stress relief. However, what makes Royal Gorilla’s high so special is that this chilled effect is balanced with an uplifting and happy high. Its potency also makes Royal Gorilla a good strain for medicinal users who want a strong herb to help with the management of their symptoms.

Royal Gorilla, which is a balanced 50% Indica/Sativa hybrid, has delightfully superb earthy and sweet tones, complemented nicely with additional notes of lemon and pine. It makes for a great-tasting smoke that won’t disappoint even the pickiest of cannabis connoisseurs.

The strain has already won multiple awards, such as the 2014 Cannabis Cup and the 2015 World Cannabis Cup, where she won first place in the best hybrid category.

In case it isn't already clear by now, the Royal Gorilla strain is truly an outstanding hybrid with fans across the globe. Well worth every grower's time!

    Title : Royal Gorilla
Comment : I grew this outside in Ohio in 2024. Very prolific plant that got well over 6ft. No bud rot. Maybe a little leggy if I had any complaints. Buds were wonderful. Very unique smell. Almost sweet. Yield was excellent and effects are very pronounced. Little goes a long way. Highly recommend.

Title : Excellent results even for a beginner
Comment : This was my first grow ever. Used 10 gal fabric pots and soil outdoors. I made so many mistakes learning, but these plants were really forgiving. I harvested so much weed, I give it away by the jar full. The high is great, strong but balanced. I am growing this again this season.

Comment : Royal gorilla is a joy to grow and smoke. It's 2025 and I got 5 Royal gorilla's, 2 mother gorilla's and 1 OG kush in flower as i speak. Man I can't wait

    Title : Tmonsterdog
Comment : Wow! This is my very first grow. The seeds germinated quickly. Beginning week 4 and I look like I know what I’m doing. A lot of research beforehand and excellent quality seeds from RQS! Thanks guys! I am beyond impressed!

    Title : Great strain
Comment : I am very pleased with how this batch turned out. I started 3 plants indoors, moved them outside and they really took off. I didn't want a huge quantity so I pulled one plant and kept the other 2 below 6 feet tall. I ended up with about 2 pounds of store grade buds. Excellent quality, tight, sticky buds. Very stony, and very tasty too.

Comment : This strain is the TRUTH!! It will get you where you want to be. Adding to my favorites.

    By B. V. on 26/Aug/2024 :

Title : Royal Gorilla: big chunky nugs!
Comment : Popped three seeds got two phenos: a short bushy and a tall stretchy one. Tall and stretchy won this one, huge chunky dense nugs just trichromes galore! Not the GG4 that I’m used to; may be more of the chocolate diesel coming thru… fantastic though!

    By S. V. on 02/Jul/2024 :

    Title : Must try
Comment : The best I've grown so far in my limited time (3 runs, 5 cultivars). Very sticky and good density. Can't wait to grow more!

    By R. B. on 24/May/2024 :

Title : Three for three.. Absolute beasts.
Comment : I purchased a three pack. All three germinated and grew like wild fire. Very easily trainable. I have a few grows under my belt now and will never use any other seeds other than Royal Queen. Superb genetics!!!

    By B. Y. on 27/Mar/2024 :

Title : Massive huge, sticky, and pungent buds!
Comment : My first new grow in over 20 years. What a pleasure to grow. I easily got over 3oz when dry from one plant! The buds are so huge and dense! Bigger than a coke can. Some buds got so heavy that their stems broke over in the last few weeks. I just let the buds hang. Very pungent, gassy, gluey smell. Curing it now. The buds wouldn't fit in regular mason jars so I had to cut into them. Growing in a 4x4 tent with 4 dwc buckets. I used Jacks 321, and added some Kelp, Fulvic, Humic ,Amino Acid, bacillus mix. I messed up and abused this plant early on with over 400ppm for a few days when it was 2 weeks old. But it recovered and came back to life after 2 weeks. It took 83 days to flower. I seriously can't believe how huge these buds are. It's unreal.

    Title : 1st time grow
Comment : I got the northern lights auto plated on 11/18 /23 waiting on the trichomes to turn, nice and easy to grow!

    By G. G. on 06/Nov/2023 :

    Title : Plant on roids
Comment : Bought 1 seed and was blown away by the growth. Very explosive plant, my pheno was heavy on the chocolate taste. Would buy again

    Title : Perfect
    Comment : Sprouted well.

bonjour est ce une variété à autofloraison, et si non, quand et comment déclencher la floraison? merci

Royal Queen Seeds Team

This is a Feminized Strain, we should have the autoflowering version soon. You can make her grown for few weeks (depending on how big you want it to be) and then change the light schedule to lead her to flowering stage. https://www.royalqueenseeds.fr/blog-que-faire-quand-votre-cannabis-cultive-maison-ne-fleurit-pas-n479
