Cannabis connoisseurs are usually very well informed about the consequences of their cannabis consumption and assume that the positive effects of this plant overshadow potential risks and disadvantages. Well, recently published scientific studies are now providing information about the correlation between marijuana use and obesity and things continue to look positive.

A healthy lifestyle can contribute to a happy life. We all know that. Smoking exorbitantly large amounts of premium bud can feel so right, by at the same time, feel terribly wrong. First doubts about the positive impact on our life quality most likely arise when we wait for the supermarket cashier to scan about 26 junk food items we feel we desperately need. Cannabis induces “munchies,” let’s face the problem.

According to the results of a scientific study by researchers at the Quebec University Health Centers, cannabis users are statistically less likely to be obese than people who avoid smoking marijuana. Obesity is sadly one of the biggest health problems in many countries around the world. Stoners, potheads, and worshippers of the home-grown bud, take a deep breath. Statistically, we are less likely to be part of the problem.

Researchers from the Quebec University Health Centers also provided some other valuable data. They looked at 700 adults between the ages 18 and 74, and analyzed the correlations between cannabis use, body mass index, and several other health indicators. People who don’t integrate cannabis in their diet, have an average BMI (Body Mass Index) of 28,6. We, the lethargic cannabis users, have an average BMI of 26,8. A healthy BMI is considered to be between 18,5-24,9, so some of us could still stand to lose a little!

obesity and cannabis

Canadian scientists published their results in the Journal of Obesity: “In this large cross-sectional adult survey with high prevalence of both substance use and obesity, cannabis use in the past year was associated with lower BMI, lower percentage fat mass, lower fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR (insulin resistance).”

Other studies show similar findings. How these scientific results are interpreted is totally up to everyone reading this article. It’s probably not the best idea to constantly smoke cannabis and eat all the junk food you can possibly buy; this research is not saying cannabis prevents obesity - but it suggests cannabis smokers must be doing something right!

I would be surprised that cannabis use is associated with a higher rate of physical activity," says study researcher Yann Le Strat.
