DiST 4 Pocket EC Tester: Easy, Accurate, Reliable

The HI-98304 DiST 4 Pocket Conductivity Tester offers an easy way to test the electrical conductivity (EC) of your water. The device provides quick and accurate readings while you make your way around the grow space.

This DiST 4 allows cultivators to determine the sodium content of hydroponic solutions with the click of a button. The device measures within a range of 0–20.00mS/cm. The dual-display LED screen offers immediate, side by side readings of EC (µS/cm or mS/cm) and temperature (˚C).

The tester features an amperometric graphite electrode that resists rust. The material won’t oxidise after repeated water exposure, and therefore offers improved repeatability.

The device is easy to use and only features two main buttons. One turns the meter on and off, and the other is used to enter calibration mode. A third, smaller button can be found in the battery compartment to alter temperature unit and automatic shut-off time.

The DiST 4 boasts automatic temperature compensation (ATC) and a measurement stability indicator to ensure accurate readings every time. The tester can handle the most brutal of conditions and operates between 0–50°C. The 3V lithium-ion battery offers 250 hours of continuous use.

Measuring EC is an essential skill for hydroponic growers to learn. The DiST 4 identifies the salinity of a solution by measuring the charge of sodium ions. Hydroponic plants require specific levels of fertiliser salts at different stages of the growing cycle.

During the vegetative phase, plants require an EC of 1.2–1.6 to allow for proper nutrient uptake. If the reading is too high, add more water to the solution to dilute the salts. During the flowering phase, plants can handle full-strength nutrient solutions of 1.8 EC.
