As cannabis becomes more mainstream, even non-smokers are beginning to see the light. And that light is leading them straight towards cannabinoid-infused health and wellness products. You can now buy a wide variety of lotions, creams, balms, potions… and bath salts.

Where weed is legal, full spectrum bath salts can be purchased at most dispensaries. Elsewhere, CBD-infused bath salts are readily available anywhere that hemp-based CBD oils can be found. Maybe not at the corner gas station, but step into any smoke shop and there they'll be, right behind the glass cases of pipes, bongs, and oil rigs.

If you purchase pre-made cannabis bath salts, they're not cheap, but they do sell well because they're very effective for relaxation as well as soothing minor aches and pains. Think of them like an epsom salt bath on steroids.

Lucky for you, you can make your own cannabis bath salts at a fraction of the price you'd pay for a pre-made product, and you won't sacrifice a thing. They're crazy simple to DIY.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE CANNABIS BATH SALTS

Making cannabis bath salts is a two-step process. First, you have to make cannabis oil. Then, you combine it with other ingredients to make the actual cannabis bath salts. This is the same oil you can use to make other topicals, like lotions, or edibles. Fancy a weed brownie or some gummies while you're enjoying your soak? You'll be well-prepared for both.

MAKE CANNABIS OIL

INGREDIENTS

  • 15–30g dried trim or buds
  • 500ml coconut oil

HARDWARE

  • Baking sheet
  • Pot
  • Stove
  • Cheesecloth
  • Rubber band
  • Glass jar

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 115°C.

2. Remove any stems from the buds or trim, then grind to a medium-fine consistency.

3. Spread ground herb on the baking sheet.

4. Bake for 30 minutes.

5. Put the roasted (decarbed) weed and the coconut oil in a pot and place on burner.

6. Heat on low for about an hour, stirring occasionally.

7. Attach the cheesecloth to the mouth of the jar using the rubberband. Allow the cheesecloth to dip down slightly so it forms a cup shape.

8. Strain the weed-infused oil through the cheesecloth to remove as much plant material as possible.

9. When the oil stops draining on its own, squeeze the cheesecloth to recover the last few drops.

PREFER BATH BOMBS TO SALTS?

Combine 224g baking soda, 150g cannabis bath salts, 112g corn starch, 112g citric acid, and just enough water to dampen the mix. Stir well, then place in spherical silicone moulds. The final consistency should be like damp sand. Let dry overnight.

WHAT CAN WEED-INFUSED BATH SALTS TREAT?

THC and/or CBD-infused bath salts are more than a way to immerse yourself, literally, in your favourite herb. Once absorbed, the cannabinoids influence the CB2 receptors in your skin, which in turn stimulate the endocannabinoid system to offer real health benefits.

Soaking in a warm tub filled with cannabis bath salts can relax the mind as well as the body. Stress levels drop, muscles relax, and pain can be treated at the source. Topicals can also reduce inflammation to ease allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, and arthritis for some patients.

Long baths in cannabis-infused water can also increase blood flow and hydrate the skin. This can make you look younger and help with a variety of skin conditions including eczema, dandruff, and psoriasis. It can also ease menstrual cramps and headaches.

WILL CANNABIS BATH SALTS GET ME HIGH OR MAKE ME FAIL A DRUG TEST?

The first part of that question gets an unequivocal “no”, and the second part gets a very strong “probably not”.

If you only use bath salts infused with CBD, there's absolutely no way you'll get high or fail a drug test. Both require THC.

You're still not going to get high if you use THC-based bath salts. It's just not going to happen, no matter how much you use or how long you soak. The oils in the salt will not penetrate deep enough into your skin to hit your bloodstream, and you only get high when THC reaches your brain via your blood.

You will probably feel very relaxed, but relaxed is not high.

To date, there have been no reports of failed drug tests due to topical cannabis products like bath salts, with one exception: high-THC transdermal patches. These products are very different from a bath product or topical lotion. They are designed to deliver medication through the skin directly into the bloodstream over the course of hours or days. However, if you're concerned about passing a drug test for any reason, play it safe and don't use any cannabis products at all.

The use of cannabis bath salts does come with one important warning message. They contain oils that can make your tub extremely slippery. You run a much bigger risk of having a slip-and-fall injury while using cannabis-infused bath salts than getting high or failing a drug screening. Be careful!
